How to join?

Any individual engaged in working life or studying within higher education is welcome to join an Akava affiliate union. The unions welcome students, employees, self-employed professionals and entrepreneurs. The jaseneksi.fi service will help you in finding a suitable union on the basis of your field of education or your degree.

If you are in working life, you can contact the shop steward or representative of Akava unions at your workplace and they will assist you in selecting a suitable union.

Social Science Professionals (Yhteiskunta-alan korkeakoulutetut, YKA) is a pioneer in the new era of trade unions. We are an interest organisation and community for social science professionals working in public services or private sector who have a university degree or are studying for one.

YKA has approx. 13,000 members and supervises their professional, financial and social interests in the labour market. We aim to advance and support the members’ career development and wellbeing at work, working life skills and capabilities in different career situations in the changing labour market. Our aim is to ensure that every social science professional is provided with opportunities to build a meaningful career suitable for them and to find a balance between work and private life.

YKA offers its members comprehensive career and legal services, training and coaching, insurances and leisure benefits. We are a community for social science professionals and provide them with opportunities to meet each other through various events, student activities, peer networks, local associations and mentoring activities.

Who can join

You can join the Union if you hold a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree from a university or are studying for such a degree. The annual membership fee for graduate members and permanently employed students is 333 euros. The basic membership fee for student members is 28 euros per year.
