How to join?

Any individual engaged in working life or studying within higher education is welcome to join an Akava affiliate union. The unions welcome students, employees, self-employed professionals and entrepreneurs. The jaseneksi.fi service will help you in finding a suitable union on the basis of your field of education or your degree.

If you are in working life, you can contact the shop steward or representative of Akava unions at your workplace and they will assist you in selecting a suitable union.


The Finnish Medical Association

The Finnish Medical Association FMA (Suomen Lääkäriliitto) is a professional organisation with over 28,000 members, thus representing the majority of medical doctors practising in Finland. The values of the FMA are the same as those shared by the profession: respect for life, humanity, ethics, medical expertise and collegiality. Supervision of professional interests is our basic task. Good working conditions and adequate salary development for all medical doctors working in various sectors will safeguard a balanced and functioning health service system. Doctors’ wellbeing at work is an important area of the interest supervision.

Who can join

You are welcome to join the FMA once you have earned a degree in medicine and been licensed to practise the profession of a medical doctor in Finland either independently or under the direction of another doctor. Those who have a medical degree from outside of Finland may apply for membership when they have been granted permission to practise the profession as described above.

You can become a student member at the end of the fourth year of studies, that is, when you have been licensed to practise the profession under the direction and supervision of another doctor. Applications for membership are handled by the FMA Board, and the membership begins on the date on which the Board approves the application.
